My Mother, the Engineer

Backstory: My mom bought a spiffy new flat panel tv when our old one died but (as I discovered today) couldn't get the remotes set up properly

Tonight's Events:
Mom: "Emily, were you watching TV today? The TV's not working."
Em: "Yes...?"
Mom: "Could you come up here please?
When I got home the tv was on but the cable was off"
Em: "Doesn't the cable remote do both?"
Mom: "No..."
Mom: *Fiddles with controls on the remote, bringing up various menus*
Em: "So you tried turning everything on and off, right?"
Mom: "Yeah and that's all that comes up..." *gestures at screen that is blank except for menus* "..maybe because it's burned into the screen from you leaving it on! All I wanted to do was watch my thousand dollar TV and now you've wrecked it!"
Em: "If there was an image burned into the entire screen then why would you be able to see the menus?"
*Mom continues to lecture me about... whatever, as I fiddle with the tv, changing the input and testing out a dvd, which obviously worked*
Em: "Is the cable out?"
Mom: *calls rogers*
*a few minutes go by*
Mom: "The cable's out."
