Emily Meets Mojitos
The story so far:
On Friday night I went to to McGuinness landing and ordered a pomegranite mojito. The waitress, who was pretty busy since it was friday night and there was a rush after the power came back on Friday, brought me a Raspberry Mojito instead, in a delicious twist of fate. It was so ridiculousl, delightfully, amazingly good that i had another with dinner. The ingredients were listed as cane syrup, mint, raspberry vodka, and lime. My mission was clear: Recreate that drink!
Goal:
The mojito I had at McGuinness Landing was, as previously mentioned, delicious. The best thing Matt and I could think to compare it to was a white freezie. But... a fresh, delicious, alcoholic white freezie. Not that you could taste the alcohol, which was awesome. It was refreshing and slightly minty. The Mojito was presented in a tall, thin glass. It had sprigs of mint in the bottom held in place with ice cubes, the drink was poured on top, what looked like a raspberry slightly muddled (bar terminology for smashed) on top, and a fresh raspberry or two and lime wedge as garnish.
Round 1:
Found all ingredients, except cane syrup. Discovered that many recipes call for "simple syrup" (water and sugar boiled and cooled) or sugar. Simple syrup is preferred because it dissolves better, but I chose to use confectioners sugar because I thought it would dissolve well and save the mess of boiling sugar water.
The recipe so far:
1. Placed mint leaves from 1 sprig of mint in bottom of glass, muddled with back of spoon
2. Put some ice on top
3. Mixed 2oz Raspberry Vodka, somewhere between 1.5 and 2 oz lime juice, appx 1 tbsp confectioners sugar and a little bit of water in cocktail shaker.
4. Like a dummy, poured it in the glass without tasting. Added raspberries, tasted. Not even close to sweet enough, vodka flavour too strong.
5. Dumped whole mess in cocktail shaker... screw presentation. Added more water & 2 more tbsp of sugar. Shook, poured back in glass.
Result: Tasty, but not quite sweet enough
Round 2:
1 & 2: Same as round 1
3: Mixed 2oz Raspberry Vodka, probably 1oz lime juice, 4tbsp confectioners sugar, water to appx. 3/4 fill cocktail shaker, shook
4. Poured into glass, topped with raspberries.
Result: Close, but not quite. Sweetness seemed right, but vodka flavour came through more than the first time, likely due to the drink not being diluted enough. Hypothesize that same lime juice as round 1 with slightly more sugar and water will do the trick.
Now to finish my drink, so I can get on with round 3...
